Vietnam’s Ministry of Labour has ordered 14 Vietnamese and 11 Taiwanese employment companies to stop work while allegations they are ripping off recruited migrant workers are investigated.

The companies are suspected of deducting money from the migrant workers’ salaries and meal allowances well in excess of the amounts allowed by the Hanoi government. Hanoi officials say many Vietnamese are unaware of the cost of living in Taiwan but are so anxious to get overseas jobs they agree to far higher brokerage fees than they can afford.
