Vietnam: PM targets Vietnam’s mismanaged power plants

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has conceded that management of hydroelectric power plants has been dangerously lax.

Vietnam’s Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has conceded that management of hydroelectric power plants has been dangerously lax.

Nguyen has pledged to tighten up management after a coalition of four non-governmental organizations alleged that dozens of people have been killed, and homes, bridges, roads and crops destroyed by ill-judged dis charges of water from dam reservoirs.

“We understand the contribution these plants make to the economic development of the nation,” said Lam Thi Thu Suu of the Viet Nam River Network, “but we call for reconsideration on planning future ones and their impacts on rivers and environment.”
