Vietnam: Rice harvest reaps yields reduced revenue

Vietnam is expecting another bad year for its rice exports after finding in 2013 that supply outstripped demand in the global market.

Vietnam is expecting another bad year for its rice exports after finding in 2013 that supply outstripped demand in the global market.

Last year Vietnam exported only 6.68 million tonnes of rice for $3 billion, a 13.45% fall in volume and 16.12% fall in value over 2012.

Among Vietnam’s usual customers, Indonesia did not buy at all, while the Philippines and Malaysia both reduced their imports, reported the Vietnam Food Association.

The impact in Vietnam would have been worse had it not been for an increase in exports of rice to China.
