The Arts Club Theatre Society is suing a numbered company that does business as Vancouver Fire & Safety for allegedly causing a flood in its Granville Island Main Stage theatre in November 2011.

The theatre company filed its notice of civil claim September 3 and alleges that Vancouver Fire & Safety left a valve “open when it knew or ought to have known that doing so would create a risk of pressure loss in the diaphragm chamber, resulting in the deluge sprinkler system to trigger and release water.”

Arts Club general manager Howard Jang told Business in Vancouver that theatre staff contained the water damage relatively quickly and no performances had to be cancelled.

He would not pin a dollar amount on damage to the theatre, which is a popular venue.

The Arts Club Main Stage theatre’s production of Avenue Q has already set the record for the longest-running production at that venue in the theatre company’s 50-year history.

The Arts Club Theatre Co. also operates the Stanley Theatre and the Arts Club Revue Stage.

By the time Avenue Q completes its run on September 14, it will have had 99 performances. It has been extended three times.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.
