The Vancouver Board of Trade has given the provincial budget a “B” grade.

“While we appreciate the consultation and analysis under way, clarity around the future sales tax regime in B.C. remains elusive,” said Elise Rees, chair of the board’s government budget and finance committee.

“The uncertainty surrounding the sales tax combined with the 1% provisional increase in corporate taxes could be a drag on the economy, especially with regard to long-term capital investment decisions.”

The board rated the 2012-2013 budget on four criteria and assessed whether the budget met the board’s recommendations, previously submitted to Finance Minister Kevin Falcon in a detailed letter.

The Board gave the budget:

  • an “A” for long-term economic vision;
  • a “B” for spending control;
  • a “B-” for debt management; and
  • a “C” for tax competitiveness.
