While Canada as a whole recorded the highest monthly job gains in 11 years, B.C.’s employment numbers were slightly down in May, Statistics Canada reported today in its Labour Force Survey.

After seeing only modest job gains in April, Canada added 95,000 jobs in May. The increase lowered the national unemployment rate from 7.2% to 7.1%.

B.C. lost 1,000 jobs in May, whereas provinces like Ontario added 51,000 jobs, Quebec added 20,000 and Alberta gained 19,000.

In March, B.C. lost 15,000 jobs. The province regained some ground in April with an increase of 9,500 jobs.

At the end of May, the Conference Board of Canada reported that B.C. had the lowest job posting numbers across the country.
