What happened: B.C. reported five new deaths from COVID-19 on April 8, including three at seniors' living facilities.

Why this matters: The vast majority of those who have died of the global pandemic have been in their 70s or were older, and outbreaks at the province's seniors' care homes and other living facilities are places can be particularly deadly.

B.C.'s provincial health officer Bonnie Henry announced a total of 45 new COVID-19 infections, for a total of 1,336. There have been 48 deaths, including five in the past 24 hours. Three of the newly recorded deaths were from outbreaks at care homes: two at Amica Edgemont Village, and one at Lynn Valley Care Centre.

There were no new outbreaks at seniors' homes, although the total number of cases recorded at seniors' homes rose by 13, to 226, from 213 yesterday. The new total includes 138 residents and 88 staff.

Outbreaks have occurred at a total of 24 homes, although there are only active outbreaks in 21 homes. The three homes that have had infections but are not considered active outbreaks because no new cases have been identified in more than four weeks are:
•Vancouver's German Canadian House long-term care facility;
•Vancouver's Little Mountain long-term care facility; and
•West Vancouver's Inglewood Care Centre.

"Unfortunately [COVID-19] continues to differentially affect our elders who are in long-term care," Henry said on April 8.

She did not specify exactly how many of the 48 deaths involved residents or workers at seniors' living facilities but has said in the past that the vast majority of the deaths were in those homes.

North Vancouver's Lynn Valley Care Centre and Vancouver's Haro Park Centre are the two homes where there have been dozens of outbreaks.

Other homes with current outbreaks are:
• West Vancouver's Hollyburn House;
• Vancouver's Central City Lodge;
• North Vancouver's Amica Edgemont Village;
• Abbotsford's Cottage-Worthington Pavilion.
