Donald Trump continues to make headlines across the world with his controversial statements about Muslims, Mexicans, women and the press, and it seems as though British Columbians are feeling increasingly uneasy with the prospect of the businessman and presumptive Republican nominee becoming president of the United States.
A huge majority of B.C. residents—88% — said a Trump presidency would be bad or very bad for Canada, according to the results of an Insights West survey released June 15. This is up 18 percentage points since August 2015 , the first time the research firm conducted a similar poll.
Canadians as a whole are feeling more concerned about Trump taking the presidency, with 76% saying he would be bad for Canada, compared with 62% in August.
“As the months go by, the level of apprehension from Canadians on the idea of Donald Trump in the White House has only intensified,” said Insights West president of public affairs Mario Canseco.
“Fewer than one-in-six [14%] Canadians think this scenario would actually be positive for Canada.”
On the other hand, fifty per cent of Canadians think Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would be good for Canada, which is a decrease of five percentage points compared with August. Just over one-in-four Canadians think a President Clinton would be bad for our country.
On the same day Insights West released this data, the Washington Post released the results of a poll that found Trump’s unfavourable rating has reached an all-time high with Americans.
