The average weekly earnings for workers in British Columbia grew by 3.1% in the 12 months to July, Statistics Canada announced September 25.

B.C. employees earned an average weekly salary, including overtime, of $893 in July. This is slightly lower than the average across Canada, which saw growth of 3.3% over the same period to $940.

“For July, average weekly earnings were up…leaving real wage growth over the same period a still-muted 1% or so, a pace not strong enough to power meaningful consumption gains going forward,” said CIBC World Markets’ economist Nick Exarhos.

“Today’s report isn’t normally a market-mover.”

Alberta still dominated when it comes to employee salaries, with the average worker earning $1,154 every week. This is up 4.8% compared with a year ago.

Nationwide, the sector with one of the biggest jumps in earnings was mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction, which saw a 10% increase to $2,049 per week – the category with the highest weekly salary.

The second-highest earnings were found in utilities at $1,773 per week.

All figures are seasonally adjusted.
