The number of employment insurance (EI) recipients in British Columbia jumped 10.1% in October compared with one month prior, Statistics Canada announced December 19.
This increase offsets the 8.5% growth seen one month prior.
Vancouver saw a 10.8% increase to 21,900, partially offsetting September’s drop of 12.9%.
B.C.’s largest percentage increase in recipients was in Abbotsford-Mission, which saw a jump of 41.1% to 3,300.
Year-over-year, however, B.C. saw an 8.2% drop, following a 16.9% decrease in September.
Across Canada, the number of EI recipients fell by 0.8% to 510,520 – down 8.4% year-over-year.
The biggest year-over-year drops in the number of EI recipients were found in:
- Prince Edward Island – down 15.1%;
- Nova Scotia and Saskatchwan – both down 12.3%; and
- New Brunswick – down 11.6%.
