The unemployment rate in British Columbia dropped to 6.3% in June from 6.8% in May, according to Statistics Canada data released this morning.
Nationally, unemployment remained at 7.1%, with a statistically insignificant overall loss of 400 jobs.
B.C. gained close to 9,000 jobs in June, which was offset by the loss of 8,200 jobs in Ontario.
Year-over-year, B.C. lost 1,200 jobs while the number of jobs across Canada remained steady.
The provinces with the lowest unemployment rates in Canada were:
- Saskatchewan (3.7%, down 0.8 percentage points from May);
- Alberta (5.0%, up 0.2 percentage points); and
- Manitoba (5.0%, a decrease of 0.7 percentage points).
New Brunswick has the highest unemployment rate (11.2%).
