B.C. unemployment up in September, down Canada-wide: StatsCan

The unemployment rate in British Columbia was 6.7% in September, an increase of 0.1 percentage points when compared with one month prior, according to Statistics Canada data released October 11.

The unemployment rate in British Columbia was 6.7% in September, an increase of 0.1 percentage points when compared with one month prior, according to Statistics Canada data released October 11.

StatsCan’s September Labour Force Survey found that B.C.’s unemployment rate still remains below the national average of 6.9%, which saw a decrease of 0.2 percentage points when compared with August.

B.C.’s unemployment rate is 0.2 percentage points lower than it was one year ago.

The province lost 5,400 jobs in September, made up of a loss of 8,200 part-time positions and partially offset by a gain of 2,900 full-time jobs.

Jobs nationwide increased by 11,900 year-over-year, and by 212,400 when compared with one year ago. This year-over-year gain represents an increase of 157,800 full-time jobs and 54,600 part-time positions.

The lowest unemployment rates continue to be found in Alberta (4.3%), Saskatchewan (4.3%) and Manitoba (5.5%).

The highest unemployment remains in the Atlantic provinces of Prince Edward Island (11.0%), New Brunswick (10.7%) and Newfoundland and Labrador (10.4%).
