A majority of British Columbians feel the price of food has risen over the last year, according to RBC data released this morning.
The quarterly RBC Canadian Consumer Outlook Index shows that 86% of B.C. residents surveyed reported price increases since 2012 – slightly higher than the national average of 84%.
The survey found that the average grocery shopper in British Columbia spends $415 per month on food. This is just ahead of the national average of $411 per month.
The average monthly spend on groceries for other regions are:
- Quebec ($448);
- Alberta ($440);
- Atlantic Canada ($420);
- Saskatchewan/Manitoba ($401); and
- Ontario ($379).
British Columbians are the least likely in the country to expect their personal financial situation to improve in the next year, but are also less likely than those in the rest of Canada to comparison-shop more than they used to (52% compared with 57%).
