Canada takes the 11th spot overall when it comes to the top destinations for expats around the world, according to an HSBC survey.

The survey looked at expats’ overall impressions of the countries they have moved to and ranked them in terms of economics, experience and raising children. Canada received an overall score of 0.48. Switzerland took the No. 1 spot with a score of 0.55, followed by Singapore (0.53) and China (0.53).

The survey found that 38% of expats heading to Canada do so to improve their overall quality of life. This is a full seven percentage points higher than the global average of 31%. Expats in Canada report higher-than-average satisfaction with environmental health and quality housing.

Canada is a great place to raise children, HSBC said. Three-quarters of expats report that their children have a better quality of life in Canada than in their countries of origin, compared with 56% globally. In addition, 68% of those surveyed said their children’s health and well-being has improved (56% worldwide).

Many people choose to move to another country after retirement, and Canada takes the number one spot globally when it comes to having the highest concentration of expat retirees. The proportion of retired expats in Canada is 31% – almost three times higher than the world average of 11%.
