Donny van Dyk is on the move.
The City Manager for the City of Delta has been named the new City Manager for Vancouver, a role he will assume on Sept. 8.
“On behalf of Vancouver City Council, I’m thrilled to welcome Donny van Dyk as our new City Manager,” said Mayor Ken Sim in a news release. “Donny brings a results-driven mindset and a strong mix of public and private sector experience that will help us deliver real, tangible outcomes for Vancouverites. As we take on key priorities like meeting our budget targets, delivering the next four-year capital plan, and advancing important work to support residents and businesses, Donny’s proven ability to deliver practical results makes him the right person to lead the implementation of council’s ambitious agenda.”
Van Dyk joined Delta as City Manager in September 2023.
Prior to that, van Dyk was City Manager for Penticton, overseeing a period of significant transition, growth and modernization.
He also served as Chief Administrative Officer for the District of New Hazelton.
In addition to over a decade in municipal leadership roles, van Dyk has held senior roles at Enbridge, where his work spanned Indigenous relations, government affairs and finance.
“I’m honoured to have council’s trust as I step into this role and am excited to serve the City of Vancouver,” said van Dyk. “I look forward to working with Mayor Sim, council, city leadership and the talented City of Vancouver staff team as we deliver on council’s agenda for a vibrant and inclusive future for everyone who lives and works in this world class city.”
Van Dyk’s last day at the City of Delta will be Sept. 5.
Deputy City Manager Marcy Sangret will act as City Manager while Delta council establishes a process to appoint a permanent replacement.
“Donny has brought strong leadership and thoughtful direction to Delta over the past two years,” said Mayor George Harvie in a news release. “Council is grateful for his many contributions, from advancing key priorities to fostering a culture of excellence within the organization. He leaves Delta well-positioned for continued success, and we wish him all the best in his next chapter.”
Van Dyk said it has been a privilege to serve Delta council as City Manager and work alongside a talented team in Delta.
“I’m incredibly appreciative of this opportunity and what we’ve accomplished together,” he said. “Delta is a remarkable community and while moving on is never easy, I’m confident in the direction the city is headed.”
A Chartered Professional Accountant, van Dyk, who was born and raised in Terrace, holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Victoria, a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Northern British Columbia and a Business Administration diploma from Coast Mountain College.
“Donny has been a transformational leader for our community,” added Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger. “His get it done attitude helped cut through red tape and deliver results for Delta residents. In a short time, he helped produce Delta’s first new Official Community Plan in nearly 40 years, plan and break ground on the Winskill pool, the largest capital project in Delta history, and make critical advancements on Ladner Village revitalization efforts. Donny is a generational talent. There is no one more qualified to take the reigns of Western Canada’s largest city than him.”
As Vancouver City Manager, van Dyk will oversee a $2.34 billion annual operating budget, delivery of the $880 billion capital budget, and lead a city-wide team of approximately 9,600 employees.
