BC Conservative Party leader John Cummins and BC NDP leader Adrian Dix will be speaking at an all-party event tomorrow morning to save the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station from imminent closure.
Dave Clark, regional vice-president of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees BC, said it's one of a series of planned events to attempt to convince the federal government to reconsider closure of the station.
"We know lives will be lost if the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station closes, we know that literally no one but the government supports this decision and yet they are moving to close the station even earlier than planned – during the most dangerous time of the year on the water," said Clark.
"With 350 rescue calls a year to Kitsilano Station at Canada's busiest port, it's obviously a recipe for disaster."
Clark told Business in Vancouver that other events are being planned to draw attention to this issue but nothing has been finalized as of yet. He is expecting a packed house tomorrow.
Clark pointed out another unique aspect to this event.
"This is the first time, and probably the only time, that we'll have Adrian Dix and John Cummins on the same stage, except for the leaders' debate."
The event will take place January 19 at 11 a.m. at the Jericho Sailing Centre.
