EY (formerly Ernst & Young) has partnered with Kim Baird, former Chief of Tsawwassen First Nation, the consulting giant announced October 7.

The partnership is intended to help EY’s clients better liaise with First Nations in fostering joint economic development. EY said Baird will share her insight into the best ways for companies to engage First Nations in future projects.

“Working closely with First Nations groups from across the province is an important step in defining B.C.’ economic future,” says Fiona Macfarlane, EY’s British Columbia Managing Partner. “Assisting proponents and public sector bodies pursuing and championing new opportunities in our energy, particularly LNG, mining and real estate sectors requires a deep understanding of our First Nations values and culture.

“That’s where Kim’s knowledge is unparalleled.”

Baird served as Tsawwassen First Nation chief from 2006 until 2012, when she lost her seat to councillor Bryce Williams, who was in his early 20s.

Baird is credited with having negotiated the province’s first modern urban treaty .
