Former premier and mayor appointed to the Order of Canada

Former B.C. premier and Vancouver mayor Mike Harcourt has been appointed to the Order of Canada, Governor General David Johnston announced yesterday.

Harcourt, who served as premier from 1991 to 1996 and mayor from 1980 to 1986, was named an Officer of the Order of Canada for his contributions on civic, legal and sustainability issues, and for his promotion of spinal cord research.

Harcourt is one of six B.C. citizens named Officers of the Order of Canada. The others are:

  • Julie M. Cruikshank, Vancouver;
  • Clyde Hertzman, Vancouver;
  • Bonnie Sher Klein, Vancouver;
  • David W. Scheifele, Surrey; and
  • Ian Hugh Wallace, Vancouver.

Other notable Canadians appointed Officers of the Order of Canada this year include Sheila Copps and Brian Tobin.
