One of Vancouver's larger law firms has a new name and more cachet to lure legal talent as it ramps up hiring following a global mega-merger.

Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP is now known as Dentons Vancouver after closing a merger last week with two other large international law firms, France-founded Salans and the U.K.-founded SNR Denton.

Dentons Vancouver, which has 65 lawyers and 100 staff, has hired several lawyers in the past few months to replace lawyers who have left, managing partner Lori Mathison told Business in Vancouver April 3.

BIV ranked the former Fraser Milner Casgrain as Vancouver's 13th largest law firm, with 65 lawyers, on the 2012 list of largest law firms.

"We have a global platform to offer lawyers and our clients that is unique in the Vancouver market in the sense that we are the first firm in Vancouver to combine globally in this magnitude," she said.

"The other real international law firm in the Canadian marketplace is Norton Rose, although they do not have an office in Vancouver."

International law firm mergers has been a trend for the past few years.

Fasken Martineau LLP announced October 22 that it planned to merge with Johannesburg-based Bell Dewar.

Now complete, the merger gives Fasken the largest international footprint of any Canadian-based law firm.

Fasken's move came on the heels of London-based Norton Rose merging with two Canadian law firms in the past couple of years: Ogilvy Renault LLP in May 2011 and MacLeod Dixon LLP in January 2012.
