The approval rating for the BC Liberals and Premier Christy Clark has fallen to 30%, down six percentage points since February, Insights West said April 10.
Meanwhile, approval for Andrew Weaver, leader of the BC Green Party, has jumped six points in the past two months to 35%, putting Weaver above Clark for the first time since the market research company began polling for the provincial election in May 2016.
John Horgan, leader of the BC New Democratic Party, came in first place in the poll with 37%, but he also saw his approval slip over the period as well; it was down two percentage points since February.
Those surveyed were divided on which of the three party leaders would be the best leader to deal with several issues. As for housing, poverty and homelessness, Horgan was seen as the best leader, while Clark was top choice to tackle the economy and jobs. Weaver was the top choice for issues relating to the environment.
“While most British Columbians cannot currently select their ideal premier, they definitely have opinions about the abilities of leaders to deal with specific issues,” said Insights West vice-president of public affairs Mario Canseco.
“Premier Clark is still regarded as a superior economic manager, while opposition leader Horgan is connecting on themes like housing, education and care.”
The Insights West survey found that 81% of those who voted for the BC Liberals in 2013 and 84% of those who voted NDP say they are likely to support the same parties in the upcoming election, but not everyone has fully committed to this. The poll found that 69% of those who intend to vote Liberal and 66% of those planning to vote NDP will not change their mind by May 9. Only 52% of those who say they plan to vote Green are totally committed.
