Inflation in Canada edged up to 1.3% in July, compared with July 2012, Statistics Canada reported today in its release of Consumer Price Index (CPI) data.
The increase follows an annual rise of 1.2% in June, and is lower than forecasts of 1.4%.
Contrary to consumer price increases in all other provinces, B.C. prices showed no change from July 2012 to July 2013. In June, prices in B.C. fell 0.5%.
Across Canada, transportation costs led the increase and were up 2.7% compared with this time last year. Gas prices rose an average of 6.1% across the country, compared with July 2012. In B.C., gas prices increased 7.3% compared with a year ago.
Nationally, housing costs were also up, rising from 1.2% in June to 1.3% in July over the past 12 months. Rent and natural gas prices rose, but mortgage interest costs fell 3.8%.
