Q&A with Jon Conlin, Forty Under 40 Winner 2020; Partner, Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, Age 35

Who or what is responsible for your work ethic?

My parents. Watching my father run a very large company successfully, and watching my mom beat cancer, has been very inspiring to me and showed me the value of hard work in many aspects of life.

What is your guilty pleasure?

Fantasy football – I am in way too many leagues!

What is the best book you would recommend?

Recently enjoyed Atomic Habits by James Clear and The Price of Tomorrow by Jeff Booth.

Now that you’re entering your 40s, what goals have you set for yourself?

I want to contribute to the continued success of the local technology ecosystem. Specifically, helping entrepreneurs start and grow businesses that have a meaningful impact on our local economy and our world.

Choose one of these five childhood career dreams: rock star, star athlete, prime minister, astronaut, detective.

Star athlete, no question.

Name your happiest place.

Whistler, any season.

What was your toughest business or professional decision?

Deciding to be a lawyer – but I don’t regret it!

Advice you would give your 20-year-old self?

Don’t stress about the little things in life (lawyers are really good at worrying about the little things). Also, always prioritize your health. WHAT IS YOUR BEST HABIT?  I start my day at 5 a.m., usually with exercise.

Tell us one improbable fact about yourself.

I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro shortly after overcoming malaria while living in Tanzania (and shortly after a major knee surgery).

Best piece of advice ever received?

Taking a long-term approach to any situation. Many mentors have told me this, and I think Naval Ravikant summarized it well: “Play long-term games with longterm people. All returns in life, whether in wealth, relationships or knowledge, come from compound interest.”

What career highlight are you most proud of?

Becoming a partner at Fasken and leading multiple major M&A transactions for great local technology companies in the same year.
