Kelowna is Canada’s second-fastest growing city in terms of number of households, according to Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corp. (CMHC) data released today.
The CMHC’s 10th annual Canadian Housing Observer publication found that between 2006 and 2011, the number of households in Kelowna grew to 74,942 from 66,925– an increase of 12% in five years.
The fastest-growing city was Moncton, New Brunswick, which saw a 13% increase in the number of households, from 51,593 to 58,294.
Nationally, the number of households grew 7.1% over the same period, from 12.4 to 13.3 million.
British Columbia grew slightly faster than the national average, with a 7.4% increase.
The provinces or territories with the highest rates of growth in the number of households were:
- Yukon (11.9%, from 12,615 to 14,117);
- Alberta (10.7%, from 1.3 to 1.4 million); and
- Nunavut (10.3%, from 7,855 to 8,661).
