As the April 30 deadline for filing taxes looms, many British Columbians may be leaving the task until the last minute.

According to a new report from H&R Block Canada, more than half of all British Columbians – 51% – have not yet filed their taxes. This is the highest percentage in the country, and much higher than the national average of 44%.

In second place in the list of top procrastinators is Ontario at 50%, followed by Saskatchewan (47%) and Alberta (44%). Respondents in Quebec were the least likely to leave things until the last minute (34%).

On the other side of the coin, 45% of Canadians filed their taxes more than a month in advance.

“You don’t get bonus points for filing well in advance of the deadline,” said H&R Block senior tax professional Lisa Gittens. “But you can get your refund earlier.”
