Around 43% of employees in B.C. would be in financial difficulty if their pay was delayed by even a week, according to Canadian Payroll Association (CPA) data released September 11.
This is down three percentage points from last year, when 46% of respondents said they were living paycheque-to-paycheque.
Nationally, 42% say they are in this precarious situation, compared with 47% last year.
The survey also found that 68% of British Columbians are saving more, up from 63% last year.
Other survey findings for B.C. were that:
- 34% say they are spending at, or in excess of, their net pay (40% country-wide);
- 76% say they have saved less than a quarter of their retirement goal (73% across Canada); and
- 50% say they are saving only 5% or less of their pay (45% across Canada).
