Last year's Stanley Cup riot dampened, but didn't reverse, the overall trend to a lower crime rate in the City of Vancouver.
According to data from the Vancouver Police Department's annual reports, the total number of criminal code offences last year continued the nearly decade-long decline in the city's crime rate.
Property crime remained the largest source of criminal code offences, with 49% of crimes in the city in this category.
Since at least 2004, the number of property crime cases has fallen steadily from 58,445 in 2004 to 33,256 in 2011.
The overall number of property crimes fell 4.2% between 2010 and 2011, with the largest declines involving theft of vehicles, theft from vehicles and fraud.
The declines offset a 1.7% increase in break-and-enter offences, a 38% increase in arson offences to 274 from 196 and a 4.4% increase in mischief offences to 4,861 from 4,597 during the same period.
