Ottawa has named current University of Toronto Rotman School of Management dean Tiff Macklem as the next governor for the Bank of Canada.
The appointment will be effective June 3, said federal finance minister Bill Morneau, after current BOC governor Stephen Poloz completes his seven-year term.
Macklem was Bank of Canada’s senior deputy governor from 2010 to 2014 and was the associate deputy minister at the Finance Department from 2007 to 2010. He has also represented Canada at the G7, G20 and the Financial Stability Board.
Macklem, 59, is a Montreal native and an expert in subjects involving sustainability in finance and the economy - especially regarding climate change and green policies in economic planning.
He was also among the contenders in 2013 to replace then-governor Mark Carney before Poloz was named to the position.
