What happened: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau suggested the government could relax tax rules ahead of the upcoming tax season to help Canadians and small businesses struggling with the economic impacts of COVID-19.
Why it matters: Trudeau's press conference Tuesday reiterated much of what he announced Monday: more economic measures are to come, and government will continue to act as necessary.
Canadians could see some kind of federal tax break – if only a break from looming tax deadlines.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday the federal government is looking to create some flexibility around the upcoming tax season. He said more information will be provided by the end of the week.
Government is also looking at Canada's emergency management act and other legislative options that would enable it to swiftly respond to a rapidly changing situation, and make changes to existing legislation around programs such as employment insurance.
A full cabinet meeting will be held later today. Additional information on economic measures, and support for workers and businesses, will be provided on Wednesday.
In the meantime, Trudeau urged Canadians to stay home "as much as possible."
“Don’t go out unless you absolutely have to. Work remotely if you can.”
Canadians are to avoid social gatherings of 50 people or more. Trudeau continued to urge Canadians abroad to return home. Global Affairs Canada will provide Canadians abroad with up to $5,000 in emergency funding to help them return to Canada or to cover basic expenses while they wait to return home.
Starting Wednesday, Parks Canada will close all national parks and heritage sites to visitors.
“Pretty much anything with a door will be closed," said Trudeau, adding that people should celebrate St. Patrick's Day at home.
He also acknowledged Ontario's decision today to declare a state of emergency. When asked by a reporter whether the federal government will declare a national state of emergency, Trudeau replied that that declaration is about the options and power it affords a government, and that the federal government is exploring its options.
“We are hard at work to create the right support package for Canadians," he said, noting that government is preparing to support Canadians for as long as necessary, be it for weeks or for months.
