Playing guitar and Christmas carols at a holiday party earlier this year led to Derral Moriyama, BMO senior vice-president of commercial banking in Vancouver, getting the opportunity to record and release a charity holiday album.

Recording studio owner Frank Gigliotti heard Moriyama at the party and convinced him to cut an album. Northstar Trade Finance CEO Scott Shepherd agreed to cover all recording and production costs.

“We’re distributing them through my office at the bank. My assistant is taking orders and then we send them out to a branch close to wherever it is that the buyers want to pick them the CD,” Moriyama told Business in Vancouver December 14.

“It’s mainly been friends and business associates so far.”

Moriyama and his team produced 2,500 of the 12-track CDs, and there is no digital download possibility. So far, they have sold about 300 CDs.

“We’d like to raise about $45,000,” he said.

All proceeds will be split between the United Way and a cancer research group at Vancouver General Hospital.
