The City of Vancouver council is to consider a staff report Tuesday that recommends a balanced $1.1 billion budget for the 2012-13 fiscal year.
The largest increase, outside of utilities, is a 4% ($8 million) increase for the Vancouver Police Department (VPD).
The VPD is expected to use that money for salary increases and recruitment and training of about 35 new officers.
A public meeting is scheduled to be held February 29 at 6 p.m. in council chambers. The council is expected to review the feedback and vote at a meeting on March 5.
Some of the other measures in the budget aim to:
• maintain core programs for vulnerable people, such as those who are homeless, need child care or are seniors;
• maintain investments in grants, arts and culture and parks and recreation programs;
• enhance public safety and economic development;
• increase investment in libraries; and,
• continue to streamline business processes and deliver services more efficiently for taxpayers.
