For the second year in a row, Vancouver has the dubious honour of being ranked as the most expensive city in North America in terms of cost of goods and services, according to a new ECA International report.

Of the top 50 most expensive cities, four are in Canada and only three are in the U.S.

The most expensive North American cities are:

  • Vancouver: overall number 35 (last year: 43);
  • Manhattan: 36 (last year: 46);
  • Ottawa: 37 (last year: 50);
  • Toronto: 40 (last year: 57);
  • Montreal: 43 (last year: 63);
  • New York: 49 (last year: 79); and
  • Honolulu: 50 (last year: 74).

The most expensive cities in the world are Tokyo, Japan; Nagoya, Japan and Oslo, Norway.

ECA carries out its cost of living survey twice a year and compares cities by looking at the cost of a basket of commonly purchased goods and services. The survey does not include accommodation rental or real estate, utilities, car purchases or school fees.

The complete survey can be read here.
