SWC Hotels LLP, which does business as Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel (SWCH), is suing the Lebanese American University (LAU) and Saad Lina for allegedly causing $76,247 in damage by setting off the hotel’s sprinkler system.

LAU allegedly took a group of students to a conference in Vancouver in March 2012 and booked 11 rooms at the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel.

Lina allegedly was one of the students who were on that trip.

“Lina hung his clothes using a coat hanger on the sprinkler head in Suite 1509, which caused the sprinkler system to activate,” the SWCH alleges in its June 12 notice of civil claim.

As a result of the alleged sprinkler activation, the SWCH claims that it incurred water damage to Suite 1509 as well as to neighbouring suites, suites on lower floors and on common areas.

SWCH further claims that it endured costs to repair the damaged personal property of tenants in suites affected by the water damage and costs to relocate tenants in suites affected by the water damage.

The SWCH claims that, on March 11, 2012, one of LAU’s staff members who accompanied the students on the Vancouver trip examined the water damage and acknowledged that it had been caused by Lina.

“On or about September 10, 2012, the SWCH sent LAU an invoice in the amount of $76,247.63. LAU has not paid said release,” SWCH notes in its notice of civil claim.

None of the allegations has been proven in court.

No statement of defence had been filed by press time.
