The largest regional awards ceremony in North America that celebrates excellence in the TV and film sector, B.C.'s 14th annual Leo Awards, will take place May 25 and 26 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver.

The gala has awards in 75 different categories – too many to award all in one night, Leo Awards president Walter Daroshin told Business in Vancouver.

Technical awards, such as sound editing, are revealed on Friday night. What Daroshin calls "sexier" awards, such as best lead performance by an actor in a feature-length drama, will be given to winners on Saturday night.

There is also a different atmosphere in the room on the two nights, he said.

The 5,000 people who pay up to $150 to attend the Friday night event are usually dressed in cocktail attire, whereas those who pay up to $225 to attend on Saturday night are usually in tuxedos and evening gowns.

"As with any awards in any industry, which are given out by peers in recognition of good work, the awards support the notion that we are a centre," Daroshin said.

"We constantly speak about the economic impact of our industry – how we employ 20,000 people and generate untold tax dollars. We're the third largest production centre in North America."
