The sequel to the made-in-Vancouver superhero film Deadpool has been given the go-ahead from 20th Century Fox.
The studio’s co-chairwoman, Stacey Snider, confirmed while speaking on a panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas Thursday (April 14) that a follow-up to the violent and vulgar blockbuster is moving ahead.
B.C.-born star Ryan Reynolds and Deadpool director Tim Miller are both set to return.
The announcement comes as no surprise after the R-rated comic book movie grossed US$757 million worldwide since opening in February.
It’s not known yet whether Deadpool 2 will return to film in Vancouver but the production got plenty of notice when it shot in B.C. a year ago.
Film crews shut down the Georgia Viaduct numerous times over two weeks in April 2015 to shoot an extended action sequence.
Meanwhile, a February report from the Motion Picture Association - Canada estimated the production spent about C$40 million of its US$58 million budget in B.C. alone.
The film employed 2,000 local cast, crew and extras throughout its two-month shoot, with those workers bringing in about C$19 million in wages.
