Vancouver-based film production company Front Street Pictures Inc. and its producer and company director Harvey Khan are among a group of defendants petitioning to have a Workers Compensation Appeal Tribunal (WCAT) ruling quashed.

The ruling concerns injuries allegedly sustained by Beverly Hills, 90210 actress Gabrielle Carteris while filming the 2006 made-for-television movie Past Tense. The ruling paves the way for Carteris to launch a personal injury suit against Front Street and other petitioners.

Carteris claims she was injured in a scene on February 7, 2006, when actor Adrian Hughes allegedly held her in a headlock and dragged her down a staircase.

The February 13 WCAT ruling determined that at the time:

  • Carteris was not a “worker” within the meaning laid out in the Workers Compensation Act; and
  • any injuries she suffered did not arise out of employment, within the scope of the act.

The petitioners are arguing that WCAT erred in law in its determination.

Among others, the petitioners include Khan’s company Central Myth Pictures Ltd., which was created solely for the production of Past Tense, director of Past Tense Penelope Buitenhuis, stunt director Brett Armstrong and Hughes.

Front Street did not immediately respond to an interview request.
