Business in Vancouver parent company Glacier Media has bought Pique Publishing, publisher of the weekly Pique news magazine in Whistler.
Glacier announced the purchase this week. The change in ownership is effective immediately.
No changes to staffing levels – the Pique employs 20 people – are anticipated.
Prior to the sale, Whistler local Bob Barnett owned the Pique. Barnett started the paper in 1994, with his late wife Kathy.
"The media world is not getting any easier for independents. I'm still interested in the job, but it's not what it used to be. Glacier has resources that they can bring to the table while everyone works to figure out how to survive in today's media market," Barnett told Business in Vancouver.
"It took some time to get my head around the sale. There is a lot of pride in building this from scratch. I took pride in being independent. But it was time."
Glacier Media owns more than 100 community newspapers in Canada. The Pique's competitor, the Whistler Question, is also owned by Glacier.
