Metro Vancouver continues to cement itself as a magnet for superhero movies as production for a rebooted film adaptation of the Power Rangers TV series begins shooting in the city Monday (February 29).

While the violent, adult-oriented Deadpool bulldozed over box-office records after filming in Vancouver last year, director Dean Israelite told IGN in 2015 the re-imagined Power Rangers will be a “fun” and “joyful” movie.

According to a release from the film’s producers, “Power Rangers follows five ordinary high school kids who must become something extraordinary when they learn that their small town of Angel Grove – and the world – is on the verge of being obliterated by an alien threat.”

Lionsgate (NYSE:LGF), which is domiciled in Vancouver but operates primarily out of Santa Monica, Calif., is producing the film along with Saban Brands.

Eagle-eyed Vancouverites might spot signs pointing to production under the working title “Shirt.” The film's production office is based out of Burnaby’s Bridge Studios on Boundary Road.

Actress Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Zack and Miri Make a Porno) stars as villain Rita Repulsa. The film also stars RJ Cyler (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl) as Billy the Blue Ranger, Becky G (Empire) as Trini the Yellow Ranger and Ludi Lin (Monster Hunt) as Zack the Black Ranger.
