Is Netflix Canada getting a bad rap?

It’s a common complaint: Canadian Netflix doesn’t hold a candle to its American counterpart.

A list published March 4 by Netflixable, a blog devoted to tracking what titles are available on Netflix in various regions across the world, shows going by sheer volume alone, this is true; while Netflix Canada has 4,386 titles, including movies and TV series, Netflix USA has 8,480 titles – almost double the selection we have here.

There are many titles we get here in Canada that are not available in the U.S., however.

For example, Canadian Netflix has all eight seasons of 24 available for streaming while U.S. Netflix doesn’t carry the series at all. Canada’s version also has some Oscar nominees and winners such as The Godfather, A History of Violence and In the Line of Fire that aren’t available south of the border.

Canada also gets SpongeBob SquarePants; Netflix USA does not.

Canada stacks up well when compared with Netflix UK. At 3,228, the British version of the services has more than 1,100 fewer shows available than we do here.

For now, there are many titles only available in the States, and Canadians wanting to watch Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Indie classic The Heathers and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia will have to wait and see if Netflix Canada will catch up to Netflix USA…or use a circumvention service such as Unblock Us. These services mask users’ locations, allowing them to use Netflix from other regions around the world.
