Just-launched Vancouver publishing house Figure 1 Publishing, formed in the wake of the dismantling of D&M Publishers Inc., is looking to reinvent the publishing business model.

“We’re not a typical trade publisher, and we’re not a vanity press,” the company’s website says. “We’re a different kind of publisher.”

That “difference” hinges on would-be authors paying their own production costs, with Figure 1 handling concept development, editing, design, marketing and distribution. Sales revenues are split between the author and Figure 1.

Three former D&M managers are launching the company:

  • Chris Labonté, Figure 1 publisher, former D&M associate publisher and fiction acquiring editor;
  • Peter Cocking, Figure 1 creative director, former D&M art director; and
  • Richard Nadeau, Figure 1 director of sales and marketing, former D&M sales director.

Earlier this month, Surrey-based Heritage House Publishing announced that it had acquired all the assets of Greystone Books, a publishing imprint of D&M.
