Canadians will have more opportunities to binge watch this summer as Shomi offers its full video-on-demand service to anyone in the country – not just Shaw and Rogers subscribers.
Shomi, in direct competition with Netflix Canada for video entertainment streaming audiences, announced its service will soon be available on all platforms – including online, tablet, mobile, Apple TV, Xbox 360 and Chromecast – following its successful beta launch last November to Rogers and Shaw customers.
Shomi plans to feature exclusive series not available on other streaming services, Canadian content and programming for children and families. The service will be available on tablet, online, Xbox 360, Apple TV, Chromecast and set-top boxes for Rogers and Shaw TV subscribers and other distributors.
"The beta has been a huge success and we're excited to now bring it to all Canadians,” said David Asch, Shomi’s senior vice-president and general manager. “We've taken the time to work out the kinks so members can enjoy a great user interface and viewing experience.”
Canadian exclusives will include Golden Globe-winner Transparent, Mozart in the Jungle,Catastrophe, iZombie and award-winning Jane The Virgin. Canadian content will include Vikings, Rookie Blue, and Mr. D, as well as past seasons of popular TV shows such as Modern Family and Sons of Anarchy.
Shomi, a joint venture owned by Rogers Communications (TSX:RCI.B) and Shaw Communications (TSX:SJR.B), is offering a free first month to its new subscribers. The service will be available to cable and non-cable subscribers for $8.99 per month.
