Vancouver’s 6S Marketing urges Apple not to name new iPhone the 6S

Chris Breikss wants Apple’s (NASDAQ: AAPL) new iPhone to be a success.

But he doesn’t want it to be a 6S.

The president of Vancouver-based 6S Marketing said there’s been a lot of confusion the past few months as speculation has ramped up over the release of Apple’s newest iPhone, which is expected to be unveiled September 9 at a media event in San Francisco.

Apple has followed a familiar naming convention when it comes to iPhones.

The iPhone 4S followed the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 5S followed the iPhone 5.

That’s why most people expect the follow-up to last year’s iPhone 6 to be called the iPhone 6S

“If you do a (Google) search for 6S now, we don’t show up. But even six months ago, we dominated the search listings,” Breikss said.

He added the marketing agency has always played off the way “6S” sounds like “success” and he’s concerned the brand could lose some of its cache if Apple takes the same name.

But despite speculation, Breikss said there’s a good chance Apple won’t name the phone the 6S.

“If people are moving up on their next phone after the 6S, what are they going to say? ‘I’m going to trade in my success?’”

The marketing agency has launched across throughout New York City, where it opened a satellite office last year, to catch Apple’s eye.

A truck has been carrying a billboard throughout the streets with the message: “Dear Apple, Please call it the iPhone 7. Sincerely, 6S Marketing.”

The agency has also launched digital ads with a similar message in Time Square.

What’s not working in favour of the device being called an iPhone 7 is Apple’s naming convention ties into the casing used by the devices.

The iPhone 5S used the same casing as the iPhone 5, just as the iPhone 4S used the same casing as the iPhone 4.

Leaked design plans indicate the next iteration of the iPhone will have the same casing as the iPhone 6, which is why people have been speculating the new phone will be called the 6S.

But Breikss said his agency won’t change the name it’s had since it was founded in 2000 if Apple names the new device the iPhone 6S.

“If we have to deal with the competing name for a year then we’ll just wait it out,” he said.
