The B.C. government and the Lake Babine First Nation signed an agreement today to collaboratively manage protected areas.
Under the agreement, the first nation will have a say in management planning, permit reviews and operation of parks.
In an interview with Business in Vancouver, deputy chief Frank Alec said the deal would be helpful as the nation develops its plans for ecotourism in the area.
"We're pleased to be part of the agreement because we know that our knowledge of the land base will assist in the developments," said Alec.
The deal follows a forestry agreement the government previously struck with the first nation in the wake of the explosion and fire that levelled the Babine Forest Products sawmill in Burns Lake.
