Canada has the sixth highest airfares in the world, according to research from online travel agency Kiwi.com released September 6.
The online travel website ranked 76 countries in the world on affordability using a series of metrics and determined that India had the cheapest flights in the world, followed by Malaysia, Russia, Portugal and Indonesia.
The priciest place to get a flight is the United Arab Emirates, followed by Finland, Qatar, the Netherlands, Japan and then Canada.
Kiwi.com’s basis for the rankings was to average four sets of costs. It took the average cost to fly:
•100 kilometres on a low-cost airline domestically;
•100 kilometres on a full-service airline domestically;
•100 kilometres on a low-cost airline internationally; and
•100 kilometres on a full-service airline internationally.
Using those metrics, India and Malaysia were far cheaper than the rest of the world, at $3.25 and $3.78 respectively. The average for third place Russia was $5.88, or about 81% more costly than India.
Canada’s cost average, meanwhile, was $38.71, or 11.91 times the cost of the average flight in India. UAE flights were 2.73 times higher than Canada, at $105.71 for the four metrics. That’s more than 32 times the cost in India.
