Canadian travel deficit with the U.S. narrows slightly: StatsCan

Travel by Canadians to the United States decreased slightly in July while travel in the opposite direction remained unchanged, according to Statistics Canada data released September 18.

Travel by Canadians to the United States decreased slightly in July while travel in the opposite direction remained unchanged, according to Statistics Canada data released September 18.

Canadians took 4.7 million trips to the United States in July – a 2.1% drop from June, largely driven by a 3.6% drop in overnight travel. Overnight car travel registered the single largest drop (5.5%), while overnight plane travel dipped by 0.1%.

Same-day car trips from Canada to the U.S. were down by 0.9% over the same period.

Canadians did a bit more overseas travel in July, with a 0.8% increase to 798,000 trips.

The number of trips by Americans travelling to Canada remained at 1.7 million trips for the month. Overnight travel from the U.S. decreased 0.2% while overnight plane travel continued an upward trend with a 1.8% increase to 321,000 trips.

Fewer overseas visitors came to Canada in July, with a drop of 0.8%.

The countries of origin for the most frequent visitors to Canada in July were:

  • the United Kingdom (approximately 56,000 trips);
  • France (approximately 37,000 trips); and
  • China (approximately 30,000 trips).
