Vancouver is bracing for congestion today, as peak numbers of cruise passengers flood the city.

Port Metro Vancouver (PMV) is projecting that today and Saturday, May 19, between 13,000 and 20,000 cruise passengers will embark and disembark at Canada Place and Ballantyne cruise terminals.

PMV has issued a transportation alert, notifying the city to expect higher traffic volumes in the downtown core and increased demand for taxis and public transportation.

Peak traffic volumes are expected between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m.

Coming through Vancouver today are:

  • Royal Caribbean Line’s Radiance of the Seas;
  • Royal Caribbean Line’s Rhapsody of the Seas; and
  • Holland America Line’s Westerdam.

Almost exactly a year ago, the city braced for a similar flood of cruise passengers.
