Vancouverites may be getting some unexpected knocks on the door from visiting friends and family in the wake of surging hotel prices.
Room prices have shot up 11% in Vancouver during the first half of 2015, according to data released Thursday (September 3) from Hotels.com’s hotel price index.
The average cost for a single-night stay in Vancouver was $174 for the six months ending in June — the most expensive price among the 10 cities most frequented by domestic travellers.
During the same period a year ago, it cost an average of $157 for a room in Vancouver.
More travellers and a lower loonie brought on the hikes over the past year, the report said.
The average price in Toronto during the first half of 2015 rose 3% to $157, while the average price in Calgary dropped 3% to $160.
Oil-rich Fort MacMurray, Alta., was hit with the biggest decline in hotel room prices, falling 18% since oil prices plummeted in late 2014.
