Vancouver's food truck vendors are hoping to drum up business by starting a new weekly art, music and food event this summer at Sunset Beach.

"We find that we do well when we congregate," Andrew Fielding, president of the Streetfood Vancouver Society and owner of the Kaboom Box food truck. "We found that we do well when we're downtown, but we do better when there's an actual event that brings folks together."

Fielding's 30-member group currently has an application before the Vancouver Park Board to use the parking lot at Sunset Beach to hold an event that would be open from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. every Friday during the summer.

Local artists and musicians would be the centerpiece of the ongoing event, Fielding said, with food trucks "as a background element to the festival."

Getting approval from the parks department will be the first step, Fielding said. After that, the society will have to confirm vendor participation and look for sponsorship and other funding.

In the summer of 2012, the food truck vendors worked with the operators of the Waldorf Hotel to organize a food truck festival near the hotel. Another festival was held at the Olympic Village in 2013, also organized by the same team of people.

"This would be different … this would be our event," Fielding said.
