Attention cross-border shoppers: if you are planning to join the NEXUS traveler program, you will have to drive a bit farther to sign up.

The enrollment centre for the program is being moved from its current spot at the Pacific Highway border crossing to the Birch Bay Square mall.

Patrick Starr, leasing agent for the mall, said having NEXUS as a tenant will mean good news for Birch Bay Square, as the approximately 140 unique applicants that will visit the mall daily for their interviews will mean more business for mall tenants, some of which are Canadian-owned businesses.

“We are finding that the majority of inquires we get from potential tenants are actually B.C. businesses wanting to open up shop down here,” Starr told Business in Vancouver via email.

“In fact, NEXUS aside, our last 4 new tenants – Betty Be Good, After 5 Fashions, Subway and Mei Jia Antiques – are all owned by Canadians.”

The NEXUS program allows travelers to bypass the regular border lineup and use a designated NEXUS line, making their crossing faster.

Birch Bay Square mall is five miles south of the United States/Canada border on the I-5 at exit 270.
