A record number of overseas tourists visited Canada in June, according to numbers from Statistics Canada released August 19.
Overseas visitors made 430,000 trips to Canada in June, up 0.3% from May and the highest number since record keeping began in 1972, according to Statistics Canada. In June 2013, tourists from countries other than the United States made 389,000 trips.
Visits from eight of the top 12 overseas markets rose compared to May, with the largest increases coming from India (5.5%) and the United Kingdom (3.2%).
The number of trips made by Australian visitors increased 2.4%, and the 26,000 trips made by citizens of that country to Canada is the highest it’s ever been.
Trips made by Americans to Canada increased 0.5% to 1.7 million trips. Overnight travel overall decreased by 0.5%, but overnight trips made by car increased by 1.6% compared to May.
Canadians travelling to the United States were less likely to travel by air. Overnight plan trips to the U.S. declined by 0.4%, but car trips rose by 2.7%. Canadians took fewer trips to overseas destinations in May.
