Wolf in the Fog, located in Tofino on Vancouver Island, is Canada’s best new restaurant, according to Air Canada’s enRoute magazine.

The establishment was chosen by enRoute writer Andrew Braithwaite, who travelled across the country sampling cuisine from coast-to-coast.

“On the extreme west coast of Vancouver Island, where rainforest meets ocean, you stumble up a flight of stairs and into a soaring cedar-clad room above a surf shop where chef Nick Nutting leads a crew trained in the precise details of fine dining,” Braithwaite said.

The menu features west-coast fare such as braised humbolt squid and roasted sablefish.

Another British Columbia restaurant came in second place, this one from Vancouver. The Farmer’s Apprentice, located at 1535 W. 6th Avenue, took the number two spot.

“Each small plate – more often, a bowl – conjured by owner David Gunawan is a precise jumble of textures and flavours,” Braithwaite said of the Vancouver eatery.

“Digging in is a sort of black magic.”

Some of the Farmer’s Apprentice’s more unique offerings include a sea cucumber dish and sweetbreads with lobster mushrooms.

Montreal’s Le Vin Papillon rounded out the top three.
